It seems to be the pet topic of people of a certain generation to discuss the inability of the present generation (yours truly included, I presume) to 吃苦. Literally to 'eat bitterness,' contextually to 'withstand hardship.' Not like they did in their day, anyway.
I mean, sure, they were the generation of the Cultural Revolution, caps off and many, many props to that but I am assured time and time again that they went through hardships so that their offspring (us, I guess) could have a chance at a better life. Presumably this means that we should not have to suffer or 吃苦 as much as they did. 'Presumably' because I find it very irritating when I'm told (albeit in a very general way in which they include reference to my entire generation) to HTFU and we have it easy, not like they did in their day.
Ok. Please.
You make our lives easy and then tell us that we can't hack it. Tell me what's wrong with that train of thought.
Anyway, I'm sure that there are plenty of us hacking it out there and just because we don't seem to be able to do it with stoic resolve as you (sons and daughters of the glorious proletariat) must have done (a bit of wingeing never hurt anyone) and without expensive therapy (paid with your 吃苦 money, thank you very much,) it doesn't mean that we, as a generation, are weak motherfuckers.
We do not need to HTFU. I repeat, we do not need to HTFU.*
*That said, there is a certain class of winger to whom I would love to forcibly HTFU but in context of this post, I thought that might be a little hypocritical.**
